What is Acupuncture ?

Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing to improve function. This is done by inserting needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, acupuncture began to become better known in the United States in 1971, when New York Times reporter James Reston wrote about how doctors in China used needles to ease his pain after surgery.

The term acupuncture describes a family of procedures involving stimulation of anatomical points on the body by a variety of techniques. American practices of acupuncture incorporate medical traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries. The acupuncture technique that has been most studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation

Contrary to initial concerns, there is little to fear from acupuncture needles. They are sterilized stainless-steel and are designed for a single use. Unlike the feared hypodermic needle, acupuncture needles are extremely thin and solid (between 0.15 and 0.25 mm diameter) and do not cut the skin. As a result, patients typically experience little to no discomfort during needle insertion. The needles usually range in length between 15 and 80 mm. Both thickness and length of needles used in acupuncture depend on the body-part being treated. Since there is so little sensation, acupuncture can be applied to virtually anywhere on the body.
